The OKC Innovation District, 1.3 square miles of hospitals, labs, and startups in Oklahoma City, needed one website that could speak to residents, researchers, and founders. Innovation Hall, its coworking and event space, sits at the center.
I worked closely with Julia and our team, starting from the Innovation District’s story and who its audiences are. The district is made up of hospitals and labs, along with places where people live, eat, and go to events, so the look is technical and scientific, but also expressive and colorful. The site has lots of white space, big bold type, three main colors whose tints shift as you move around, and the watercolor texture from their logo on the calls to action.
On the development side, this was the first time I built my own custom Elementor widgets from scratch. The site is made from more than twenty of them, with ACF handling the post types. Events filter by date with a custom flatpickr calendar, and an Add to Calendar button builds a calendar file from each post.
Connecting the directory to the map took the most care. When their team saves an organization, a script looks up its coordinates in the background, and checking a box places it on the custom MapLibre map with a pin showing its details.
